email hosts tutorial

Most web hosting services provide a basic level of email hosting. If email hosting is a primary need for your hosting search, please check out out Email Hosts Review page. It provides a quick way to select the best host for your email needs.

Email Accounts

When you purchase a hosting solution, typically you select a domain name to accompany your new hosting plan. Adding email addresses in the form of:

me@mymydomain.com

us@mydomain.com

is a straight forward feature that can help your family, church or business website present a more professional image.

POP Email

POP or POP3 (Post Office Protocol) is a standard client/server method for sending and receiving mail. When you receive mail, it is held on the email server until you pick it up with a email program like Outlook Express, Eudora, Mozilla Thunderbird or Netscape Messenger.

IMAP Email

IMAP stands for Internet Message Access Protocol. IMAP is another standard protocol for sending and receiving email.

Email you receive is held on your mail server until you login with your email program. With IMAP, email stays on the server until you delete it or move it to a local mail folder.

IMAP is an improvement over POP because email stored on an IMAP server can be read from several computers without having to transfer messages back and forth between computers.

SPAM Tools

If you use email, then you should be very familiar with SPAM. An email host that provides SPAM tools will attempt to remove SPAM before it reaches your email client. If your host does not provide SPAM tools, you can still remove SPAM automatically with your email client.

Web-based Email

Web-based email services enable you to access email via a web browser. You log into your email account via the Web to send and retrieve email. With web-based email, you can access your email from anywhere that you have a web browser and an internet connection.

Email Forwarding

Email forwarding will allow you to setup aliases that all point back to the same account. For example, you may create a sales@mydomain.com and webmaster@mydomain.com then have any email that goes to those accounts forwarded to mainaccount@mydomain.com or any other email account that you regularly use.

Mailing Lists

If you are a business or regularly email your users, a mailing list will provide a simple way to contact your users quickly. You can establish a simple mailing list email like user@mydomain.com and simply send a single email to that account and reach hundreds or even thousands of users.
